Information exchange and Cooperation between DOF and the OceanMind
On 13 January 2020, at 10:00 a.m., Mr. Mesak Pakdeekong, Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, welcomed the delegates from the OceanMind consist of Mr.Bradley Soule, Mr.Mark Nicholson, and Ms.Natalie Tellwright. Both sides exchanged information and experience on cooperation in fishery resource management, including combatting the Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing that leads to sustainable fisheries. The meeting was held at the Tuna meeting room, 6th floor, Chulabhorn Building, Department of Fisheries, Bangkok, Thailand. The OceanMind is a not-for-profit organization that empowers enforcement and compliance to protect the world's fisheries. The OceanMind began in 2014 as "Project Eyes on the Seas," a collaboration between the Satellite Applications Catapult and The Pew Charitable Trusts. The organization focuses on using satellites and artificial intelligence, OceanMind empowers fisheries authorities and seafood buyers to understand the compliance of fishing around the world, both near and offshore. Besides provide confidential direct support, training, and capacity building to governments and IGOs, as well as risk management and due diligence to the seafood industry. Shrimp Health Resources Improvement Project (SHRImp)
On January 10, 2020, at 10:00 a.m., Mr. Thaworn Jirasophonrak, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, along with the Department of Fisheries officials attended the meeting to hear the progress report of "Shrimp Health Resources Improvement Project (SHRImp)" by representations from Fish Vet Group Asia Ltd., Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), FAI Farms, and INVE Aquaculture. SHRImp project is a project under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Fisheries and Inve Thailand Ltd and working with the shrimp farmers in Chumpon and Surat Thani provinces in Thailand. The project aims to develop tools and interfaces to farmers, industry associations, including the Department of Fisheries in the surveillance and prevention of shrimp diseases such as Enterocytozoon Hepatopenaei (EHP), acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND). Additionally, to improve their productivity and to help clubs, co-ops, and local government better understand and manage to emerge and reduce disease outbreaks at individual farms and the area-level. Also, to reduce the risk of shrimp farming and production, which will benefit the development of the Thai shrimp industry. Mr. Mesak Pakdeekong, Director-General of the Department of Fisheries on the joint official visit to Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia
On 23 December 2019, Mr. Alongkorn Ponlabut, advisor to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives along with Mr. Mesak Pakdeekong, Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, H.E. Mr. Songphol Sukchan, Ambassador of Thailand to Indonesia, and a delegation from the private sector consisting of (1) Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand (2) Thai Frozen Food Association (TFFA) (3) Thai Tuna Industry Association (TTIA) and (4) The Pet Food Industry Association of Thailand (PIA) paid an official visit to Jakarta, the Republic of Indonesia. They paid a courtesy call on H.E. Edhy Prabowo, The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and H.E. Bahlil Lahadalia, The Chairman of Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). Mr. Alongkorn Ponlabut and his team congratulated them on their new positions, also the occasion that Thailand and Indonesia a very close to the diplomatic relations of both countries and will mark the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year (2020). Furthermore, both sides discussed and joint press statement on combatting the Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing also ASEAN cooperation through pushing ASEAN general fisheries policy and ASEAN Network for Combating IUU Fishing in joint disposal of marine waste. Moreover, discussing the import of lobster larvae that will be reared to the market size and increases market demand from both home and abroad. As well as driving investment in fishery business between the two countries by using the strengths of Thailand and Indonesia and suitability in terms of business that West Papua is a suitable area to be a pilot area. Thailand has discussed with FAO on in-depth conducting to support the development of Good Practice Guidelines in the unloading of fishery products in Thailand
Thailand has discussed with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on in-depth conducting to support the development of Good Practice Guidelines in the unloading of fishery products in Thailand. The meeting was held during 16 - 20 December 2019 at the Kuladam Meeting Room, 7th floor, Chulabhorn Building, Department of Fisheries, Bangkok, Thailand. On 16 December 2019, at 9.30 a.m., Dr. Naruphon Sukumavin, Director of the Marine Fisheries Research and Development Division, the Department of Fisheries, Thailand, chaired a meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The meeting aimed to discuss in-depth conducting to support the development of best practices in the unloading of fishery products in Thailand. Due to unloading, it is an issue that has been mentioned that there are loopholes in international fishery management. Which a starting point of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. Furthermore, the last day of the meeting at 9.30 a.m., Dr. Vicharn Ingsrisawang, Deputy Director-General, the Department of Fisheries, Thailand, presided over a meeting with FAO, including related agencies. Cooperation between Thailand and the People's Republic of China on Lancang-Mekong Fisheries and Aquatic Ecology Cooperation Working Group Program
On December 19, 2019, at 9:30 a.m., Mr. Thaworn Jirasophonrak, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, Chaired a meeting to discuss the establishment of "Lancang-Mekong Fisheries and Aquatic Ecology Cooperation Working Group Program" to preserve aquatic animal resources along the Lancang-Mekong River between Thailand and the People's Republic of China, as well as among Lancang-Mekong countries. The cooperation led by the People's Republic of China, Mr. Dong Jinhe, with the experts and the director of the Department of Fisheries, including relevant the Department of Fisheries officials, attended this meeting at the Tuna meeting room, 6th floor, Chulabhorn Building, Department of Fisheries, Bangkok, Thailand. Mr. Bunchong Chumnongsittathum, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries along with Mr. Pholphisin Suvanachai, Director of Fisheries Foreign Affairs Division, as a representative of the Department of Fisheries attended The 34th INFOFISH Governing Council Meeting as an INFOFISH member state during 16 - 19 December 2019 at the Champa Central Hotel in Male’, the Republic of Maldives. With the Minister for Fisheries of the Republic of Fiji, HE. Semi Koroilavesau delivered a statement at the Inaugural Ceremony of the Meeting. INFOFISH is a regional intergovernmental organization for marketing information and technical advisory services for fisheries products in the Asian and Pacific region. It was originally launched in 1981 as a project of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It has 13 member nations; Maldives, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Fiji, India, Iran. Malaysia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The session aims to strengthen cooperation in marketing information and technical advisory services for fisheries products and jointly formulate policies and operational activities to maximize benefits for the aquaculture industry in Thailand and member nations.
