The Department of Fisheries, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is organizing a Training Program on International Trade in Fisheries and Aquaculture Products. This program is set to take place from August 26 to 30, 2024, at the Department of Fisheries, and will also be available online. The objective of the program is to enhance participants' knowledge and understanding while building capacity in the realm of international trade concerning fishery and aquaculture products. Topics will include global trade challenges, contemporary trends in fisheries and aquaculture, and potential career paths within the seafood industry.

Mr. Banchai Sukkaew, the Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, remarked following the inauguration that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stands as one of the most significant specialized agencies within the UN framework. Founded through a UN resolution in 1945, the FAO is instrumental in gathering, analyzing, and distributing vital information related to food, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries to its member nations, thereby assisting them in the development of agricultural policies.

Thailand joined the FAO as its 49th member in August 1947. At present, the organization comprises 194 member countries globally. The country is endowed with considerable fisheries resources and has a strong potential for the production of fishery and aquaculture products, which are vital for its economic advancement and development. Nevertheless, the international trade of fishery products encounters numerous obstacles, including both tariff and non-tariff barriers, which serve as impediments to trade. These issues hinder Thailand's ability to fully capitalize on the opportunities presented by international seafood trade.

In its capacity as a member country, the Department of Fisheries, in partnership with the FAO, is facilitating a Training Program on International Trade in Fisheries and Aquaculture Products scheduled from August 26 to 30, 2024 at the Department of Fisheries as well as online. The training is designed for various stakeholders, including government officials, representatives from the private sector, and students. The training program will be organized into three separate groups:

Group 1: Focused on government officials, including officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, and Ministry of Labour, to improve their knowledge and skills in managing the country's trade activities.

Group 2: Tailored for representatives from the private sector, this session will deliver valuable insights into global market trends, as well as the opportunities and challenges involved in accessing international seafood markets.

Group 3: Targeted at students, this session will offer guidance on career opportunities within the seafood sector.

The Director-General of the Department of Fisheries elaborated that the training program will encompass lectures, hands-on exercises, question-and-answer sessions, and evaluations following the training. This initiative will feature instructors from the FAO, various international organizations, and seasoned experts in international fishery trade and aquaculture products, who will impart comprehensive knowledge. The curriculum will explore a variety of engaging subjects, including global production and trade dynamics, the international trade landscape and regulatory frameworks, as well as international instruments pertinent to fisheries and aquaculture and their relevance to global trade. Furthermore, it will examine market access issues through trade characterization, non-tariff measures, and technical trade barriers.

The Department of Fisheries anticipates that this training will greatly improve comprehension and develop skills across all facets of international trade in fishery and aquaculture products. The program is designed to tackle the intricate challenges and barriers associated with global trade, offer perspectives on contemporary trends in fisheries and aquaculture worldwide, and examine career prospects within the seafood industry for attendees. This initiative will aid in the advancement and enhancement of Thailand's capabilities in international fishery and aquaculture product trade.
