The Thailand Shrimp Health Workshop was organized by the Department of Fisheries in collaboration with the Centre For Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) of the United Kingdom. The main objective of the workshop was to foster cooperation and knowledge exchange among experts and researchers in aquatic animal health. Additionally, the workshop aimed to discuss strategies for improving disease surveillance systems, analysis, and emergency management of emerging infectious disease outbreaks in marine shrimp. Mr. Praphan Leepayakhun, the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, presided over the opening ceremony of the workshop. The event was attended by over 40 participants, including experts, researchers, officials from the Department of Fisheries, the National Science and Technology Development Agency, and educational institutions. The workshop took place on 15 February 2024 at the Phayun Meeting Room, Chulabhorn Building, Department of Fisheries.

Mr. Praphan Leepayakhun, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, revealed that marine shrimp is an economically significant aquatic species for Thailand. In the past, it generated annual revenues of nearly a hundred billion baht, as it was popular among consumers both domestically and internationally. Consequently, there was widespread cultivation by farmers. However, in 2012, Thailand faced a crisis with the outbreak of Early Mortality Syndrome or Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis (EMS-AHPND), resulting in severe damage to the marine shrimp industry. This situation prompted the Department of Fisheries to recognize the importance of disease management in all aquatic animals, particularly marine shrimp, to mitigate risks and reduce the occurrence of diseases. Currently, there is a positive trend in shrimp production. In 2017, production reached 389,656 tons, and in 2018, it increased to 394,391 tons.

The "Thailand Shrimp Health Workshop" is one of the projects under the agricultural cooperation between Thailand and the United Kingdom, aimed at fostering collaboration between Thailand, the United Kingdom, and countries in the ASEAN region in the field of aquatic animal health. The focus is on marine shrimp health, which is crucial for the global shrimp aquaculture industry. Additionally, it directly impacts the quality of production and the production potential of the countries involved.

He further elaborated that this workshop presents an opportunity for operational officials of the Department of Fisheries, as well as external individuals with expertise in various related fields, to enhance their knowledge of Thai aquatic animal and marine shrimp health. With over 40 participants, including experts from different fields within Cefas related to aquatic animal health and marine shrimp health, discussions centered around emerging infectious diseases in the Asia-Pacific shrimp industry and the utilization of genomics technology in marine shrimp health. The aim was to collectively devise effective shrimp health management strategies, promote research, and foster collaboration in managing emerging infectious diseases. Additionally, it aims to create opportunities for future research partnerships in aquatic animal health between Thailand and the United Kingdom.
